Bespoke built-in carpentry — MJD Building & Carpentry, Hertfordshire

Carpentry

Carpentry is in our name for a reason. Before MJD became a full building company, carpentry was the foundation — and it still is. We build fitted furniture, bespoke wardrobes, staircases, alcove shelving, structural framework, and garden outbuildings that are made to the exact dimensions of your space. Not catalogue-bought and trimmed to fit. Made properly.

What to Expect

  1. Survey & Measure

We visit, take precise measurements, and talk through exactly what you want. For fitted furniture and bespoke joinery, every millimetre matters — we won't start cutting until we're certain of the design, dimensions, and finish. You'll receive a fixed written quote covering all materials and labour.

  2. Design & Materials

We'll advise on the best materials for the job — solid timber, MDF, plywood, or a combination — and discuss finish options: paint, stain, lacquer, or natural oil. For staircases and structural work, we coordinate with building control where required and can liaise with structural engineers if the project demands it.

  3. Manufacture & Install

Bespoke work is built to your space, not the other way round. Where possible we pre-fabricate off-site to keep disruption in your home to a minimum, then install and fit on-site. Structural carpentry is carried out in sequence with the wider build to ensure everything is square, level, and load-bearing where it needs to be.

  4. Finishing & Snagging

Every carpenter takes pride in the finishing details — the mitres, the reveals, the painted edges, the fit of a door. We don't rush the finish to tick a job off the list. Everything is inspected before we consider the work done, and we walk through it with you to make sure you're completely satisfied.

"The carpentry throughout the house is exceptional — every wardrobe, every shelf, every detail has been done with real care. You can tell the difference between someone who's good at their job and someone who takes real pride in it. MJD are the latter. We've already asked them back for phase two."

Carpentry FAQs

What types of carpentry work do you take on?
Broadly everything: bespoke fitted furniture (wardrobes, shelving, cabinetry), staircases and balustrades, structural carpentry (timber frames, roof structures, loft conversions), doors and frames, window boards, skirting and architrave, garden outbuildings, and all the first and second fix carpentry that comes with a full building project. If it involves timber and skill, we do it.
What's the difference between bespoke and off-the-shelf fitted furniture?
Off-the-shelf fitted furniture is built to standard module sizes and then cut to approximate fit — there are almost always gaps, fillers, and compromises. Bespoke means we build directly to the exact dimensions of your room: the alcove that's never quite square, the ceiling that slopes slightly, the chimney breast that narrows the back wall. The result fits properly and looks like it was always meant to be there.
Do you supply materials or should I source them?
We supply everything unless you specifically want to source your own (some clients have particular timber suppliers or hardware preferences, which is fine). We have established trade accounts with timber merchants and hardware suppliers, so our material costs are competitive. Everything is itemised in the quote so you can see exactly what you're paying for.
Can you match existing carpentry in my home?
Usually yes. Matching period mouldings, skirting profiles, or existing paint finishes is something we do regularly — particularly in older properties where standard profiles aren't available. We'll take a sample away to find the closest match or have a profile custom-made if necessary.
Do you build garden offices and outbuildings?
Yes. We design and build timber frame outbuildings from the concrete base up — including insulation, cladding, roofing, electrics, and internal fit-out. Most garden outbuildings fall within Permitted Development so don't need planning permission, but we'll advise on your specific situation during the survey.
