Completed garden landscaping project — fresh turf, porcelain patio, Hertfordshire

Landscaping

From patios and driveways to complete front-to-back garden redesigns, MJD transforms outdoor spaces that have been neglected or simply never quite worked. We handle everything: design, groundworks, paving, turfing, planting, drainage, and boundary treatments. Every project starts with understanding how you actually want to use the space — not just what it looks like on a plan.

What to Expect

  1. Design Consultation & Quote

We visit the space, talk about how you want to use it, your preferences for materials and planting style, and your budget. We'll produce a design plan and a fixed-price quote covering all groundworks, hard landscaping, and soft landscaping.

  2. Groundworks & Preparation

Existing features are cleared, the ground is excavated and levelled as required. Drainage is considered and designed at this stage — before anything is laid on top. Getting the groundworks right is what prevents patios from sinking and lawns from waterlogging.

  3. Hard Landscaping

Paving, patios, driveways, steps, retaining walls, and boundary treatments are installed. Materials are properly bedded and jointed; we don't cut corners on depth or pointing that affects long-term stability.

  4. Soft Landscaping & Finishing

Turf laid, beds prepared and planted, fencing and gates fitted. Any outdoor lighting, water features, or drainage gullies are installed. The space is left clean and ready to enjoy.

"Our garden had been a building site since we moved in three years ago. MJD turned it around in three weeks — and it looks better than anything we'd imagined. They were considerate about how much mess they made, tidy at the end of every day, and the finished result is exactly what we asked for. Already planning the next phase."

Landscaping FAQs

Do I need planning permission for garden work?
Most garden landscaping doesn't require planning permission. The main exceptions are: hard surfacing over 5m² at the front of the property (which must be permeable or drain to a lawn or border), outbuildings over a certain size, and work in conservation areas or on listed buildings. We'll flag anything that could require approval when we survey your property.
Can you work in small gardens or those with restricted access?
Yes. We regularly work in tight gardens, gardens with narrow side-gate access, and basement-level plots. It requires more careful planning for materials delivery and waste removal — but it doesn't stop us, and it doesn't change the quality of the result.
What type of paving do you recommend?
It depends on the application, budget, and the style of your property. Porcelain is durable, low-maintenance, and suits contemporary spaces. Natural stone — sandstone, limestone, or granite — is timeless and ages beautifully. Block paving is versatile and repairs well. We'll bring samples and advise on what suits your specific conditions and soil type.
Is drainage included in the quote?
Yes, where required. Good drainage planning is built into every landscaping project we take on. Patios without proper falls and drainage points flood; lawns on heavy clay without drainage planning waterlog. We design drainage into the spec from the start — not as an afterthought.
