Flooring installation — Hertfordshire property

Flooring

New flooring changes a room immediately — but only if it's fitted properly. MJD installs hardwood, engineered oak, LVT, laminate, and porcelain tile across all room types. Crucially, we also prepare the subfloor correctly — levelling, screeding, and damp treatment where needed — so the floor doesn't move, creak, or fail. A floor that's properly installed is one you won't need to think about again.

What to Expect

  1. Survey & Specification

We inspect the existing subfloor, check levels, assess moisture content, and advise on the right product for your space. Not all floors suit all subfloors — and getting this right is the most important decision in the whole job.

  2. Subfloor Preparation

Levelling compound, screed, or structural boarding is laid as required. A damp proof membrane is fitted where moisture readings indicate it's needed. The subfloor must be flat, stable, and dry before any finish is laid — this step is where corners are too often cut.

  3. Installation

Flooring is fitted using the correct method for the product: glue-down, floating, or nail-down. Thresholds, door bars, beadings, and trims are fitted neatly. Existing skirting boards are carefully removed and refitted, or new ones are fitted where required.

  4. Inspection & Handover

The floor is walked and checked for any inconsistencies, cleaned thoroughly, and handed over with manufacturer care instructions for the specific product.

"I'd had a bad experience with a cheap flooring company before — the floor started lifting within months. MJD were completely different: they found the damp issue in the subfloor before anything was laid, sorted it, and the floor has been perfect ever since. They know what they're doing."

Flooring FAQs

Can you fit flooring over underfloor heating?
Yes. Many flooring products are compatible with underfloor heating (UFH), but not all. Solid hardwood is generally not recommended over UFH — engineered oak or LVT are better suited. We'll advise on compatible products and the correct heating commissioning procedure to follow before and after installation.
Do I need to remove my existing floor first?
Usually yes — we'll remove the old floor as part of the job. However, if the existing floor is well-bonded, level, and clean, it's sometimes possible to overlay directly. We'll assess during the survey and advise on the best approach for your specific situation.
How long does flooring take to install?
A typical living room or kitchen floor takes 1–2 days once the subfloor is ready. Larger areas, complex patterns (herringbone, diagonal lay), or rooms needing significant subfloor preparation take longer. We'll give you a specific programme when we quote.
The floor has some movement in it — is that a problem?
It depends on the cause and severity. Minor flex in a timber subfloor can often be resolved with new structural boarding. Significant movement could indicate a structural issue that needs investigating before any new floor is laid on top. We'll tell you honestly what we find during the survey.
